Salon Consultation for a Haircut
Well today is the first day we at Auburn are going to write in our blog, yippee. We have come up with 8 points for a successful Haircut Consultation.
1. It is important that if for any reason you (the consumer) feel that you are not being understood or uncomfortable for any reason, ask for another stylist.
2. Let your stylist know how frequently you get your haircut and when the last your haircut was.
3. What Length do you want your hair to be?
How much is an INCH? If you ask several different people, you will hear several different answers. We keep a couple of rulers in the shop for reference so that everyone is on the same page about how much hair will be cut
4. Length equals weight - If you want your hair to feel lighter you will either need shorter hair or layers.
5. Let us know what you like and don't like about your hair.
Do you like a choppy, messy look or very clean angles? Do you like to put your hair behind you ears? Do you want a blunt or jagged fringe? A good stylist can get you there, but will also let you know if you hair type or life style is not well suited for a particular style, and then come up with some other options.
6. Let us know how you REALLY style your hair.
Your cut should be the foundation for how you style your hair everyday, not just how it gets styled at the salon.
7. Your hobbies and job are important components to a haircut.
There IS a way to find a good balance between a hairstyle you love and you life style. For example, if you are a runner and like to wear your hair in a ponytail, your hair needs to remain long enough to put in a ponytail.
8. If for any reason you feel that you are not being heard or if you feel uncomfortable for any reason, ask for another stylist.
On a final note, working with a stylist is a collaboration. Your stylist is there to offer his or her insight and expertise to your next great haircut at Auburn Salon.

Certified Organic Hair & Skin Care Products
Innersense, a new beauty and wellness company based in Northern California, is emerging on the hair and skin care horizon with a unique perspective: to enlighten, encourage and support beauty and wellness professionals by sharing organic philosophies and practices for self-care. The Innersense product line enters the marketplace in September with a prestigious collection of nine products designed to cleanse and nurture hair and skin as well as mind and spirit.
Founded by a dedicated group of executives from various disciplines in the beauty&wellness; industry, Innersense is the result of their vision for a line of toxin-free, sulfate-free products that contain the highest level of certified organic and biodynamic ingredients. The Innersense products are a synthesis of carefully selected certified organic oils, extracts and essences, completely free of artificial fragrances&colors, sulfates and petrochemicals. All Innersense formulas contain organic ingredients known for their soothing, balancing, moisturizing and anti-oxidant benefits. All products are completely non-toxic, with no carcinogenic, allergenic, petrochemical-derived or endocrine disrupting ingredients.
"We think of Innersense as a consciousness and a culture," says Greg Starkman, who founded Innersense with partners Judie Maginn, Joanne Starkman and Mary Beth Janssen. "Each product is accompanied by a simple "self-care ritual" designed to calm and focus the user while he or she is using the product. The approach is truly holistic, because it not only addresses the physical side of hair and body care, it addresses psychological and spiritual aspects as well."
As consumers become more aware of their exposure to toxins in daily life, the demand for safe, organic products is high. Judie Maginn cites a study by the Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.org) which shows that women use an average of 9 personal care products each day containing 126 unique chemical ingredients, and 25% of women use 15 or more products.
"This information is important," says Maginn. "Consumers are discovering how many chemicals they are exposed to on a daily basis. We're trying to teach beauty and wellness professionals and consumers how to make hair and body care a conscious, contemplative activity, promoting personal well-being and environmental sustainability. Therefore, we've aimed for the highest levels of organic purity."
Starkman sees Innersense as an opportunity for beauty and wellness professionals -- and their clients -- to be more committed to organic principals.
"We founded the company on those principals, and on our desire to support the industry that has been a part of our lives for the last 25 years."

Moroccan Oil for Your Hair
We just had a product knowledge class from Moroccan Oil. The main healing ingredient in Moroccan oil is Argan oil which is from the nuts of the Argan tree, which grows almost exclusively in this region. Sometimes you can spot goats up in Essaouira's argan trees, feasting on the fruit. The oil, which is said to have restorative and age-defying effects, has become one of the latest miracle ingredients in the beauty industry. High in Vitamin E and essential fatty acids, it is believed to help all sorts of skin conditions: dry skin, acne, psoriasis, eczema and wrinkles. Moroccans slather it on their skin, hair, nails and even their babies." http://travel.nytimes.com
In our class we learned that one of their first products was their Oil Treatment. It is highly absorbent even on dry hair. It does not leave any residue and it can be applied repeatedly. One of the suggestions for dry or damaged hair was to apply the Oil treatment at night before bed. Apply the oil to the hands like hand lotion then evenly distribute on dry hair from bottom to the top of the hair. We suggest brushing your hair with a boar bristle brush for even distribution. In the morning wash as usual with Moroccan oil Shampoo and Conditioner.
You can use Moroccan Oil on damp hair. Either pre blow out or if you prefer you can apply to wet hair and let it air dry. Their treatment oil is a great for if you live in an area that has extreme weather. It is great UV protectant.
Here in Santa Monica a trip to Malibu or Venice are a great opportunity to take the oil treatment along. Even using Moroccan oil as a pre swimming pool protecter is a great idea. Filling the hair cuticle with Moroccan Oil before swimming acts as a protective barrier. In our very dry climate it heals the hair!!!
We have loved our beginning journey with Moroccan Oil. We look forward to keeping you up to date with our experiences with the rest of the line.

More Moroccan Oil
More Moroccan Oil, wow, we are loving the whole line. The two styling creams are wonderful. The Hydrating Cream not only helps control frizz it adds shine as well. It is great for fine hair, medium hair or thick hair. Additionally, like the oil treatment, in small amounts it can be applied to the hair dry for added frizz control. This is a daily remedy that will make your hair cut or hair color really shine. Hydrating Cream is great to create a straight soft touchable finish.
The Intense Curl Cream creates the most luxurious touchable curls around. The Curl Cream is really like a leave in conditioner. Imparting hydrating benefits without a sticky or crunchy residue. For the very best results mix 2 pumps of the Hydrate Cream with one pump of Curl Cream mix them together in your hands and distribute from your ends to roots. You can also try a few drops of the Treatment oil with the Curl Cream mix in together and distribute evenly. Air dry or for more volume diffuse and scrunch and see your bouncy curls come to life!!!
Good as gold Gold Glimmer Shine Spray, shine, shine, shine. Gold Glimmer tops off your Moroccan Oil styling experience. Once your hair is completely styled and thoroughly dried now is the time to add the Golden Touch. If you have a part put your hand over it. Spray the Gold Glimmer about 10 inches from your head and spray a light mist over your hair. Do not touch your hair for 5 minutes!!!! You can also spray the Gold Glimmer into your hands and then run your hands through your hair. Another rick is to spray it into your hair brush to prevent static.

Tinsel Time at Auburn
The holidays are here!!! I can't believe it. Didn't school just start back? Driving around town I see Halloween shops popping up all over town. I see Halloween goodies in my market. I have taken these signs seriously and have start thinking about what we at Auburn can offer for fun this holiday season.
One of the girls in the shop came across HAIR TINSELS. WOW, how fun are they!!! You can guess what they are...yep super thin strands of Tinsel. What a fun item, they are perfect for any age or hair length. They can be attached by tying them in or gluing them in like hair extensions.
Amazingly they are very durable. Gracie put about 5 strands in my hair last week. Then I realized I need my color done. what a great opportunity to see what would happen to them. I can tell you NOTHING happened to them. I colored my hair root to end and my sparkly Tinsels are still sparkly.
I usually blow dry my hair. So of course I wondered how they would hold up to that every day?? I usually blow out my hair straight with a boar bristle round brush. I too, have scrunched my hair. The Tinsel easily took on both shapes. AWESOME!!!
Hair Tinsels come in a bunch of colors. You can choose a color similar to yours for a shimmer effect. Or you can choose a color that is wild and crazy.
Hair tinsels are a great accessory for the many special occasions coming up. They are so much fun.

Markets, Beauty Supplies and Salons
Diversion, is the widespread problem of professional salon products being sold in unauthorized locations, such as drug and grocery stores, on-line, and discount sites. These products are easily recognized, as their labels state "Genuine products guaranteed only in salons" or the like. Although these products my seem like bargains, we urge you to avoid them, since they cannot be guaranteed to perform as tested.
Furthermore, any counterfeit or contaminated products could cause skin irritation, or even infection. Is the possible risk really worth it? We believe that it is not.
PLEASE do not but any such products, even though they may seem to be "a good deal". It is only when bought through a professional salon that the products' quality and performance are backed and ensured by the manufacturer.
